- Introduction
These PC packages support the high and medium frequency word requirements of 'National Literacy Hour'.
They are suitable for children with or without learning difficulties. They may also be of use to adults with learning difficulties as they give practice in over 300 common words.
There are currently 4 packages available covering:
  • Reception Year
  • Years 1 and 2
  • Year 4
  • Year 5.
    • A Management System is included for keeping a history of each individual's progress.
    More details can be found by selecting an item from the 'Contents' on the left, or click on one of the other packages to see details about it.

      - PC Requirements
    The software is designed for PCs running Windows™ 3.1, 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP or NT.
    Each package is supplied uncompressed on 1.4-mb floppy disk(s). You can install on a hard drive or run directly from disk, which is ideal for consultants using different PCs.
    The packages use only 16 colours but require audio features for full use. They will work in monochrome and without sound but not all features are available.
    You must have a mouse, or other pointing device, as this is used to perform all the activities. The keyboard is never used.
    You need a printer only if you want to print scores.
    You need a microphone to use the 'Sound Recorder'.
    If a PC can run Windows™, then it should have sufficient power for this software.

      - About the Packages
    The packages are designed to support the high and medium frequency word requirements of the 'National Literacy Hour' and is suitable for practice at home or in an educational environment.
    You can choose the colours you find best for the activities.
    You can choose from a script, 2 cursive, a serif and a sans-serif font.
    All activities maintain scores and these can be printed on leaving an activity.
    You can skip or repeat exercises in an activity to suit individual needs and there is always an exit button visible to get out of an activity at any time.
    Incorrect spellings are never shown and, where appropriate, left to right tracking is forced.
    There is some animation to add visual interest but this can be turned off if it is inappropriate.

      - Package Contents
    For each word for the year(s) covered by a package:
  • Sight recognition (word search).
  • Word to sound matching.
  • Word shapes.
  • Spelling (sight and/or sound, copying and memory).
  • Word usage (with and without tracking).
  • Years 1 and 2 only: colour matching and day, month and numerical orders.
    • The 'Management System'.
    The 'Sound Recorder'.

      - Management System
    Allows names to be stored and, for stored names, allows individual identification when using the packages.
    For identified names, records by date the activities performed and the scores achieved.
    Allows looking up and printing of the recorded activities and scores, by date, or by activity, for stored names.

      - Sound Recorder
    Using the'Sound Recorder', you can record the high and medium frequency words to suit your local pronunciations.
    You may record 2 sets of custom sounds for each group of high or medium frequency words. You could, for example, have both a female and male voice in your local accents.
    Any 'custom sounds' along with the default sounds are available for selection during activities.

      - Licences
    Licences are available for 1, 5 or 10 users.
    You may install the software on as many PCs as you are licensed for and at any one time you may run that number of versions, either from floppy disks or installed versions.
    You must not sell or give, free of charge, any copies of the software in any form either in its own or under another name.

      - Download Trial
    The trial version contains samples from Reception Year of 'National Literacy Hour' with the Sound Recorder and the Management System, which enables you to record individual's scores.
    Click download 'National Literacy Hour' (525kb) for the trial version, but see below if you want all the packages.
    If you want to download all three packages, click download all (893 kb) to download all three at the same time and save download time.
    'Unzip' into a folder of your choice, then run 'SETUP.EXE' to create Start Menu Entries for Windows 95/98, or Program Icons for Windows 3.1. If it does not run you most probably do not have 'VBRUN300.DLL'.
    Click VBRUN300.DLL (225 kb) if you don't have it and 'unzip' it into the directory with the trial version or into '\WINDOWS' or '\WINDOWS\SYSTEM'.
