- Introduction | |
| This package is suitable for children with or without learning difficulties and also for adults who wish to improve their reading skills. | |
| The package can be used to support the high and medium frequency word requirements of 'National Literacy Hour'. | |
| A composer is included for writing your own stories for use with 'Reading Assistant'. | |
| More details can be found by selecting an item from the 'Contents' on the left, or click on one of the other packages to see details about it. | |
  - PC Requirements | |
| The software is designed for PCs running Windows™ 3.1, 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP or NT. | |
| The package is supplied uncompressed on a 1.4-mb floppy disk. You can install it on a hard drive or run it directly from disk, which is ideal for consultants using different PCs. | |
| The package uses only 16 colours. It will work in monochrome but colour selection features will not be effective. | |
| You must have a mouse, or other pointing device, as this is used to perform all the activities. The keyboard is only used with 'Composer'. | |
| You need a printer only if you want to print stories. | |
| If a PC can run Windows™, then it should have sufficient power for this software. | |
  - About the Package | |
| The package comes with over 100 stories, with the earlier ones being based, in part, on the high and medium frequency word requirements of the 'National Literacy Hour'. | |
| You can choose the colours you find best for reading the stories. | |
| You can choose from a script, 2 cursive, a serif and a sans-serif font. | |
| You can choose the speed at which a story is displayed. | |
| Stories can be shown a page, a line or a word at a time, with or without tracking. | |
| At the end of each story there is a comprehension test. | |
| Using the 'Composer' you can add your own stories and comprehension tests. | |
  - Composer | |
| Allows you to compose your own stories, with or without associated comprehension tests, and group them by degree of difficulty or any other way you choose. | |
| Provides statistics of the story you are writing, including various word frequency counts and an estimate of the Fog index. | |
| Allows you to print your stories in the form of work-sheets, in various fonts. | |
| Allows you to see a list of   'National Literacy Hour' high and medium frequency words to help in maintaining a reading skill level. | |

  - Download Trial | |
| The trial version contains only 10 stories and does not allow you to save stories from 'Composer'. | |
| Click download 'Reading Assistant' (140 kb) for the trial version, but see below if you want all the packages. | |
| If you want to download all three packages, click download all (893kb) to download all three at the same time and save download time. | |
| 'Unzip' into a folder of your choice, then run 'SETUP.EXE' to create Start Menu Entries for Windows 95/98, or Program Icons for Windows 3.1. If it does not run you most probably do not have 'VBRUN300.DLL'. | |
| Click VBRUN300.DLL (225 kb) if you don't have it and 'unzip' it into the directory with the trial version or into '\WINDOWS' or '\WINDOWS\SYSTEM'. | |
